With 10 kids competing it was a very busy day.  There were four experienced racers and six rookies.  The kids ran two eight lap heats and a ten lap main.

 

In the first heat Claire was in second place at the start and she took the lead and maintained it for the complete race.  The finishing order was Claire, Megan and Sara.

 

The second heat started with Claire on the pole and she again took the lead at the start.  Claire was able to maintain for the race but on the second to last turn Megan made an pass attempt and almost got by.  Megan dropped back in behind Claire on the last turn and Sara almost got around Megan.  The finishing order again was Claire, Megan and Sara.  The picture above is from the finish.

 

Because she won both heat races Claire was put on the pole for the main.  Claire took the lead half way down the front straight.  Going into the first turn #77 who had started in 4th place drove over the curb and into the side of Claire’s kart.  #77’s front wheel got caught in Claire’s right rear wheel and the both went spinning off of the track after the exit of turn one.  The other racers behind the got caught up in the mix and Megan also spun off of the track.  Tyler spun sideways on the track and Sara drove over the front of his kart getting airborne in the process.  The rest of the karts all came to a stop just after the turn.  All the mom’s and dads out watching the race started running toward the accident and then the carts started going one by one.  No one was injured and the kids did what they should and safely got their karts back on the track and started racing.

 

After the dust cleared the order was Brendan, Sara, three rookies, Claire, #77, Megan and the rest of the field.  Claire under a lot of pressure from #77 kept a cool head and focused on working her way back up to the front.  Multiple times #77 bumped Claire from behind in the exit of turn four and one time during a failed pass attempt on the back straight she hit Claire in the side before dropping back behind.  Driving smart and smooth Claire was was able to pass the the two rookies between her and Sara.  #77 and Megan were able to make the passes also.  On the second to last lap Brendan spun in turn 11 and Sara was able to pass him for the lead.  Claire was able to close up the gap to Brendan but she was not able to catch him before the checkered flag.  Megan and others passed #77 when she spun so the finishing order was Sara, Brendan, Claire and Megan.

 

Claire was happy that her good friend Sara had won her first race.  For Sara it was just like Claire winning her second race ever.
